Russian poultry prices were improving

In the second half of 2006, Cherkizovo Group, one of Russia 's leading integrated meat producers, has seen a recovery in poultry prices.

The Cherkizovo company said that as a result of earlier investments, poultry volumes increased by 50% in the second half of the year compared to the same period in 2005. Total 2006 volume growth was also up by 36% compared to 2005.

“In January 2007, we launched a TV advertising campaign to support our leading poultry brand, Petelinka,” the spokesman said.

How heavily sales will be affected by the recent bird flu outbreak is unclear. The presence of H5N1, confirmed by tests last week, was the first such outbreak to be recorded so close to the Russian capital.

Chief veterinarian for Russia, Nikolai Vlasov, said that 1,400 birds originating from the Moscow bird market had been destroyed, along with about 200 others. International veterinary officials have voiced confidence in Russia 's ability to cope with the problem.
