Poultry helps prisoners in Fiji

As part of a rehabilitation program for inmates, Naboro Prison has started a poultry programme.

40 inmates will be assigned to look after the $91,000 poultry sheds on a rotational basis. Japanese ambassador Masashi Namekawa, who was chief guest at the ceremony, said the project would help the Prisons Department promote cost effective rehabilitation services.

Commissioner of Prisons, Colonel Ioane Naivalurua said there were 7000 chicks in the poultry shed. The chicks would be eaten by the inmates, with the surplus sold to Crest Chicken.

Interim Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said there was a 50% rate of return of prisoners to jail in Fiji . Naivalurua commented, “This project was undertaken in recognition of the importance of encouraging vigorous rehabilitation training programs by the Prisons Department in an effort to reform the inmates before their release from prison.”
