Jharkhand introduces new chicken breeds

By introducing new breeds, Jharkhand in east India plans to boost its production of country chicken and bring down fowl prices.

The two breeds of the country chicken to be provided to poultry owners - colour broiler and vanraja - are expected to grow fast and survive difficult conditions, according to an animal husbandry department official.

"The district offices of the department will inform poultry owners about the quality of new breeds and urge them to purchase and grow country chickens to replace broiler chickens," he said.

The new breed of country chicken will be introduced to boost production, with the help of Rs 60 million (€1.1 million) allocated to the animal husbandry department to support the plan to bring in new breeds.

Currently, country chicken sells at Rs.110 (€1.97) per kg and broiler chicken at Rs 60 (€1.07).

"By the end of the current financial year, we hope the price of country chicken will go down by 20 to 30 percent. Hopefully, in the next five years, the price of country and broiler chicken will be the same," said the official.
