Indonesia: Lohmann Brown seminar discusses breeding selection goals

Persistency of laying rate, egg quality, feed efficiency, health status and behavior, were the aspects mentioned by Dr. Hans-Friedrich Finck – Managing Director of Lohmann Tierzucht, as the realistic breeding selection goals of Lohmann.

Dr. Finck shared these goals in the technical seminar of Lohmann Brown management conducted recently in Jakarta by Lohmann and PT Multibreeder Adirama Indonesia (Multibreeder) of JAPFA group, the exclusive distributor of Lohmann products.

“To pursue those goals, our R&D team has set some standards such as basic research of genomic selection and performance control. We also will adapt genotypes to locations and housing systems. For example in Indonesia, we will adapt our products’ genotypes to Indonesia’s characteristics,” Dr. Finck stated.

New markets
Lohmann targets to gain world market share in 2012 more than 37%. The action of this target, Lohmann will re-enter Mexico and enter new markets such as Libya and Vietnam. Another target is to strengthen their international production network. “Our first grand-parent stock shipment to Australia is in June 2011,” Dr. Finck informed.

Specifically in Indonesia, Dr. Finck said that Lohmann will continue to expand the parent stock (PS) sales of Multibreeder. The PS sales in Indonesia: 33,500 Lohmann Brown in 2008 and 102,000 Lohmann Brown in 2010. “With the additional farm capacity, Multibreeder will be able to supply big players such as Charoen Pokphand,” he said.

Feeding management
In addition, nutritionist Robert Pottgüter, talked about correct feeding management and feed formulation for Lohmann Brown.   

Pottgüter explained that all management and feeding measures must have the prime objective of supporting the hens’ feed intake and of maintaining this as best as possible even under heat stress. “In this respect, the concentration of nutrients in the feed mixture must be continually adapted in line with the flock’s daily feed intake,” he said.

About feed formulation, Pottgüter analysed that some feed formulations in Indonesia are too high in protein. This situation would increase metabolic body heat production. In order to reduce metabolic body heat production, he recommends optimising protein supply based on the ideal protein, adding more fats and oils to the feed mixture, and reducing the carbohydrate content in the feed mixture.

To maintain good feed intake under heat stress, the feed structure should be coarse grained, well structured and homogeneous and should contain as little dust and fine particle as possible.
