Ongoing HPAI in Vietnam, 2152 birds destroyed

Three new outbreaks in Vietnam of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 were reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health. Two outbreaks took place in villages in the north of the country and one outbreak was in the south.

The three outbreaks were all localised to villages, and the source of the epidemic is as yet unknown.

The HPAI epidemic in Vietnam was first reported to the OIE in 2006, and the country’s struggle to eradicate the disease is now in its 6th year.

Dr Nam Hoang Van, Director General of Vietnam’s Department of Animal Health, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, reported that in total 2152 birds were destroyed, and that standard quarantine measures were being carried out.
