RECALLS: Chickens and eggs

US: largest poultry recall since 2004Australia: salmonella outbreak prompts egg recall

(US) Although no illnesses have been reported, Kraft Foods , has increased its initial recall of 23,881 kg of chicken breast strips to 1.27 million kg. The initial recall occurred in February after listeria bacteria was found in one package. Kraft expanded the recall to all its products made at the same plant. It did more tests and found more listeria, says Kraft's Elisabeth Wenner.
The recall now covers Oscar Mayer/Louis Rich Chicken Breast Strips and Cuts in 6-ounce and 12-ounce packages with a "use by" date of 28 May 2007, or earlier. The packaging bears the number "P-19676" inside the Department of Agriculture mark of inspection.
(Australia) A salmonella outbreak has prompted an urgent recall of eggs from Game Farm Enterprises, a Queensland company. Queensland Health negotiated the voluntary recall with the Mount Cotton company after cracked and dirty eggs were supplied to small retail outlets and fruit and vegetable shops around Queensland.
According to Queensland Health spokeswoman Dr. Linda Selvey, the eggs were linked to several incidents of salmonella poisonings within the past few months.
