Bird flu hits northern Turkey

Turkish authorities have announced that the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus has been discovered among chickens in a village in the northern Black Sea region.

The avian influenza virus was found among dead chickens that were collected from Saz village in Zonguldak province, the Agriculture Ministry said, adding that all necessary measures have been taken.
Turkey's last major outbreak of bird flu was in 2006, when at least four people died after contracting the virus and dozens more being hospitalised. Turkish authorities were forced to cull more than one million domestic fowl.
