A former president of a meatpacking firm, Meat Hope Co. has been sentenced to four years in prison.

The Japanese court found Minoru Tanaka guilty of selling ground red meat, which has been unlawfully mixed with pork and chicken after it has been falsely labelled as 100% ground beef. Tanaka has been indicted on charges of fraud and breach of the Unfair Competition Prevention Law.

According to the ruling, Tanaka shipped a total of 138 tonnes of the falsely labelled beef to 16 companies.

Meat Hope Co. has been in bankruptcy since July, a month after the false labelling was revealed.
