Ramadan brings no aid to Turkey's suffering poultry industry

Ramadan, typically a beneficial time for Turkey's poultry industry is proving otherwise, which is not good news for the country's already struggling poultry industry.

In previous years poultry sales doubled during Ramadan, but excessively hot temperatures have had a negative effect on consumption and production, Necmettin Çalışkan, the general coordinator of Beyza Piliç, a Turkish poultry company, said recently. Due to high summer temperatures, chickens perish before they weigh 2.5 kilos, the legal weight limit to cull the animal set by the industry representatives.

The Turkish poultry sector was just starting to recover from the effects of the 2008 global crisis, however, high temperatures started affecting the sector negatively with demand decreasing as consumers have become disturbed by the smell of chicken meat in the heat and prefer to eat vegetables, Çalışkan said.

About 10-15% of chicken meat produced in Turkey is exported, but the sector has had concerns over exports too. The recent turmoil in Syria has negatively affected exports, leaving exporters facing a bad situation.

    This article does not appear to paint a good picture of Turkey's broiler production ,perhaps it is only a smaller segment of the industry, operating open type housing with non insulated roofs and poor production management techniques.To aim for a 2.5kg
    bird under this type of condition is asking for problems! perhaps the weight set specs need some changes?
