Cargill’s ground turkey confirmed with Salmonella strain
A sample of Cargill’s recalled ground turkey is confirmed to be contaminated by the salmonella Heidelberg outbreak strain, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced.
185,000 pounds of ground turkey was recalled on September 11th this year following an earlier recall from the same plant in Springdale, Arkansas in August.
In updating the earlier recall notice with confirmation of the outbreak strain, FSIS said lab results indicated that the isolate is resistant to ampicillin, gentamicin, streptomycin and tetracycline.
The ground turkey is implicated in an outbreak that as of Sept. 14 had infected 119 people in 32 states with Salmonella Heidelberg, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
