UK supermarket drops Vion as poultry supplier

UK retail giant Sainsbury’s has dropped international food group Vion as a poultry supplier, following a supply chain review.

Sainsbury’s said it had decided to consolidate its chicken supply as part of its 2020 sustainability plan and as a result Vion would no longer supply chicken products to the retailer with effect from February 2013.

A spokesperson for the company said it would instead be sourcing its chicken supply from Two Sisters and Moy Park.

Vion said it was disappointed with the decision. “A strong business case was presented, but unfortunately we were unsuccessful in that process,” said Rob Smith, communications spokesman.
“While this news is disappointing, we will continue working with Sainsbury’s until February 2013 as the business is transferred to their new supply base,” he added.

“Our goal is to ensure we can continue to provide the highest-quality produce at the best possible value for our customers, while at the same time supporting British farming and agriculture,” said a Sainsbury’s spokesperson.

“We are currently working with the supply chain, both new and old, to ensure we continue to meet customer demand while we transition to the new suppliers,” Sainsbury’s added.

Despite the decision Vion said it would continue to supply the supermarket chain with other meats.
