Students call on Nigeria's governement to stop poultry smuggling

Agricultural Science students at the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, have called on the Nigerian government to stop the smuggling of poultry products into the country, the Nigerian Tribune reports.

They state that the continuous illegal importation of the poultry products would have a long term effect on the economy of the nation, as well as posing a significant health risk, given that the illegality of importation has as a consequence that the products also evade health and safety inspections.

"Nigeria borders are too porous to importation of poultry products such as frozen chicken and turkey, egg powdered, hatchable eggs, among others.
"We have observed that most of these poultry products are not hygienically prepared and preserved. What do you expect from foods that are illegally imported into the country," Mukail, a student spokesman said.

The students' have appealed the Nigerian public to stop buying illegal poultry products, out of awareness for their own safety.

The Nigerian Government should work towards achieving a reduction in the rate at which poultry products are been smuggled into the country. This products should be made to pass through the necessary clarification processes and be sure that they are fit/safe for its citizen's consumption before being allowed into the country. Beside the government should be more focused on developing and empowering the poultry industry of the country and work towards a tremendous increase in production, meeting the populace demands and exporting poultry products.
