Litmus has launched indicators to measure average levels of ammonia in Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). Litmus Ammonia Monitors (LAMs) function from 1-24 hours in a time flexible format and provide average ammonia readings from 1-100 PPM.
The indicators are the result of years of development and collaboration between LITMUS FQI, academic institutions, and industry professionals.
Jack Lewis, President of LITMUS FQI, said: “The new LAMs are a significant advance in measuring ammonia levels. Now CAFOs will provide better growth environments and grow healthier animals by being able to reliably measure average ammonia levels. LAMs eliminate the very subjective practice of smelling or using expensive and difficult to use devices with inherent inaccuracies.”
Ammonia level information allows CAFOs to fine tune adjustments to supplements, vents, timers and heat to control ammonia in their facilities. Nicole Klosterman, Bio-Mos/De-Odorase Brand Manager at Alltech, Inc. stated: “We use the LITMUS Ammonia Monitors, the first technology providing average ammonia PPM levels. The information is available from 1-24 hours and readings ranging from 1-100 PPM levels to prove that putting De-Odorase in the feed will lower ammonia levels.”
Animals grown in lower ammonia environments are larger, healthier, and a better grade of animal with better feed conversions. Benefits of using LAMs include immediate ammonia evaluations, more income, lower costs, safer environment and lower overall emissions.
