Zimbabwe: Demand for DOC grows daily

According to the president of Zimbabwe Poultry Producers, Solomon Zawe, the demand of day-old chicks (DOC) is going up every day and the association has a production target of 100 million day-old chicks this year

Zawe believes this target is attainable as banks were also financing poultry projects. However he has urged the government to provide famers with incentives to produce more grain in order to reduce feed prices.

Over the years cheap imported chickens have flooded the market elbowing out local producers who encountered high production costs as the country experienced an economic meltdown. The re-introduction of surtax on chicken and other goods to promote local industry has, however, revived the local industry as imports declined.

The adoption of multiple foreign currencies (in 2009) has enabled the establishment of more hatcheries and breeding stocks, Zawe said. Poultry farmers produced about 54 million-day-old chicks in the first half of last year compared to 52 million produced the whole of 2011.

  • Mr Luis Benavides Andrade - When the demand grow up and local offer (private sector) can't go in the same speed, is necessary the government apply laws, plans and taxes to encourage local market.

I agree with Mr Zawe if feed costs reduces the poultry industry will thrive as more people would venture into the sector.High cost of production experienced by hatcheries and the cost of feeds is on daily basis crippling the industry in my country too.I hope not only Zim authorities but also Nigerian authorities are reading you Mr Zawe.

Mr Solomon Zawe is right about the surtax and we need the support when selling our chickens. Can someone please help me sell my chickens. I can produce 5000 at a time but now my hands are tied because I can not find buyers. Are there any organizations which I can join for me to be able to sell. At the moment I have 1000 which in two in two weeks time. My cel +26377 123 6890.

Mr Zawe, what is needed is to mobilize small chicken producers and get them buyers in the market. It's not about the resources but it's about getting your chickens bought after maturity. In my area I witnessed capable producers especially women who can supply about 1000 chickens each but their challenge is to get buyers for them. At the end they are conned by those buyers who promise to pay after a certain period but never owner their promises. At the end these producers end up bankrupt and unable to continue with the business. So, get us the buyers and I can promise you 20 000 chickens per month.
