Second case of avian influenza in the Netherlands
Again, avian influenza has been detected on a poultry farm in the Netherlands. Tests are carried out to find out if it is a low or high pathogenic strain.
Last week, high pathogenic avian influenza was detected on a 150,000 layer farm in Hekendorp, the Netherlands, which resulted in a domestic ban of all transport of chickens, eggs and poultry manure and poultry bedding materials. Because no further cases were detected this ban was relaxed as of yesterday.
Due to the second case of avian influenza, found on a poultry farm in Ter Aar today, the ban comes back into force as of today (November 20th ). The farm in Ter Aar has three barns, with a total of 43,000 layers. The animals will be culled as soon as possible.
It is not clear yet if the strain on the farm in Ter Aar is the highly pathogenic one. According to the Dutch ministry, it is a H5 strain. The high pathogenic strain H5N8, found in Hekendorp, was also found in Germany and the UK this month.
