Possible AI in Spain

09-10-2006 | |

A dead duck with AI-like symptoms, found in a park south of Valencia, is undergoing bird flu testing in a Madrid laboratory.

Preliminary reports indicate that the duck did not have the deadly H5N1 strain of the avian influenza virus, but a 10km security perimeter has been set up as a security measure.
According to a local government source, Spain has in place national protocols for rigorous testing whenever there is even the slightest suspicion of a possible infection. As a result, the dead duck, along with 35 others, was sent for analysis last week.
A dead bird found near Vitoria in the Basque country last July tested positive for the deadly strain. It was the first and only case in Spain to date.
