Eastern Europeans run Norwegian farms

Nearly a third of the work on Norwegian farms is now being carried out by people from Poland and the Baltic states. This is shown by fresh figures from Economic Report (Oekonomisk Rapport).


While an increasing part of the farm labour is being carried out by Eastern Europeans, the Norwegian farmer is increasingly becoming an administrator who no longer does any farm work.


After the EU expansion with 10 new nations two years ago, it has become easier for Eastern Europeans to stay in Norway and work for longer periods.


Simen Myhrene of the Myhrene Farm at Sylling in Vestfold county believes that it would be impossible to carry out Norwegian farming at today’s level, without the Polish workers.
