World Bank to support Bangladesh's Avian Flu Programme

The World Bank is interested in taking part in Bangladesh's Avian Influenza Programme worth US$38 million from 2007 - 2011.

The programme consists of Avian Influenza Preparedness and Response Project (AIPRP), costing approximately US$22 million, and the Health, Nutrition and Population Sector Programme (HNPSP), which deals with human health.
The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MoFL) will be the implementing agency for AIPRP. Avian influenza activities of human health will be implemented by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
The World Bank said they would also strengthen disease surveillance, diagnostic capacity and laboratory facilities, adding that the programme will support applied veterinary research, improve bio-security in poultry production and trade and support surveillance of migratory birds.
Public awareness of AIPRP would strengthen the national and regional (within Bangladesh) mass media to accurately report on avian influenza.
