US poultry industry safety record at its best

24-10-2007 | |

Illnesses and injuries occurring among poultry processing workers in the US have reached an all time low, says the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labour Statistics.

“The poultry industry has continued to improve its performance through an emphasis on safety, new and redesigned equipment and processes, early intervention and other measures that protect employees,” said director of science and technology for the National Chicken Council, Steve Pretanik.
In the poultry processing sector, in 2006 the rate of illness and injury per 100 full-time workers was 6.6 – down from 7.4 in 2005. This means that the rate has been sliced to less than half the level of 14.2 in the year 2000.
Additionally, the rate of illnesses and injury in the poultry industry is below that of the broader food manufacturing sector, which was 7.4 per 100 full-time workers.
