H7 bird flu in S. Korea: thousands of ducks slaughtered

Thousands of ducks at four southern farms South Korean have been slaughtered following the discovery of low pathogenic bird flu virus in the region.

Nearly 4,000 ducks slaughtered
According to officials, the avian virus was first discovered on a farm near Gwangju, 250 km south of Seoul. As part of precautionary measures, approx. 3,800 ducks were culled on the farm, as well as more than 12,000 at three other farms in the area.
Low pathogenic poultry virus
Tests have confirmed that the strain of avian influenza is H7, which is not contagious to humans.
South Korea struggled against seven outbreaks of the poultry virus between November 2006 and March 2007.
