Alabama farmers participate in air quality programme
Hundreds of Alabama farmers have signed up for a programme hoped to produce the first national study of air quality at large livestock operations.
As the farms are getting bigger, so does the concern grow as to what environmental or health problems are being created. It is important to see what emissions are being produced, and if these emissions are a problem, what to do about it and how to reduce it.
Twenty livestock barns and manure-storage facilities nationwide will be monitored. Scientists begin work at the facilities in May.
According to the EPA and Alabama Farmer’s Federation, 761 of 3,500 poultry facilities in Alabama are participating.
