Malaysia struggles with poultry smuggling

Malaysia is increasing alertness over poultry smuggling amid fears that frozen chicken meat is being illegally shipped from countries hit by bird flu.

Twenty-eight tonnes of frozen chicken meat worth $29,500 that was seized from a truck entering the country from Singapore has been destroyed by custom officials.
It is suspected that several international syndicates may be involved in poultry smuggling, gaining huge profits, because poultry from neighbouring countries, particularly China, is substantially cheaper than Malaysian poultry.
It is believed that the smuggled meat, which is repacked in Singapore, enters Malaysia and is sold to food processing companies and restaurants.
