Campylobacter cases in poultry are begining to fall

According to experts within the poultry industry, measures introduced in 2006 to reduce the level of campylobacter infection on chicken farms and processing plants may be starting to have an impact.

There has been a decrease in the number of human cases of campylobacter for the period August 2006 to April 2007, compared with the previous eight months.
Poultry Industry Association executive director, Michael Brooks, says monitoring has shown a reduction of about 10% in campylobacter levels at processing plants.
It is too soon to prove a direct link between that and the reduced number of human cases, however, he says the industry hopes that the efforts aimed to reduce this disease in poultry, which were introduced last year, are making a difference.
