Tuberculosis linked to poultry plant

According to South Carolina health officials, 131 workers at a Greenville, S.C., poultry plant have been exposed to tuberculosis.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control recently tested 286 workers at the House of Raeford Farms poultry plant. This followed a positive test result for one worker who is suspected to have an active form of the infectious disease.
A spokesman for the Department of Health and Environmental Control, Thom Berry, has said that the cases identified are not the drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis, but are "treatable" forms of tuberculosis.
According to Berry, the 131 workers who had positive skin tests did not necessarily have active cases of tuberculosis, but had been exposed.
Further tests are being conducted. Apparently the House of Raefold Farms officials in Greenville have declined to comment. Berry could not say whether the worker contracted tuberculosis at the plant.
