Russia inspects US and Canadian poultry farms
Russian veterinary inspectors will visit poultry farms in the US and Canada, according to a source at the Federal Veterinarian and Phytosanitary Control Service.
Seven inspectors have entered the US on a 20-day mission where it will be decided how many farms are inspected. A 20-day mission has already begun in Canada.
Russia asked the US Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to coordinate the schedule of inspections last February, and scheduled for July.
The inspections issue was moved to the front burner after salmonella was found in poultry products and the deliveries from several US farms were stopped.
Russia is a leading importer of US poultry. According to the National Chicken Council (NCC), Russia imported 748,576 tonnes of poultry (chicken and turkey) worth of $461.5 million in 2006, as against 787,093 tonnes worth of $669.2 million in 2005. The majority of imports were chicken (737,127 tonnes worth of $443.3 million).
