Bird flu fear gone, Brazil’s chicken exports double

With the fear of avian flu gone, Brazil has doubled chicken exports, with an increase of over 100%.

In July, 2007, Brazilian chicken meat exports totalled US$440 million. This is an increase of 106% when compared with the same month of the previous year. A total of 284,000 tonnes were shipped, which is 53% more than in July 2006, according to the Brazilian Poultry Exporters Association (Abef).
Exports are, according to the association, a result of increased imports by the Middle East and the European Union. However, one need to take into consideration that Brazilian exports in 2006 were on a steep decline due to international chicken meat consumption being reduced as a consequence of avian flu in Europe and Asia.
In July, the Middle East imported 88,160 tonnes of chicken meat from Brazil, amounting to US$118.13 million. The European Union imported 46,530 tonnes, the equivalent of US$112 million.
