Icelanders choose chicken, first time ever

Over the last 12 months, for the very first time, Icelanders have purchased more poultry than lamb and mutton.

Since the settlement in 874, sheep has been the meat of hoice for Icelanders. However, this habit seems to be taking a interesting turn as chicken is becoming the more popular meat.
“We chicken farmers thank consumers for this warm welcome,” said head of the Association of Chicken Farmers in Iceland, Matthías H. Gudmundsson.
Head of the Association of Sheep Farmers, Jóhannes Sigfússon, commented that he is not surprised that chicken has become more popular than lamb and mutton. “Consumption of mutton was almost abnormally high in Iceland. There is a very strong tradition for consumption of mutton, but it is not realistic that it will continue forever,” he said.
From August 1, 2006, to July 31, 2007, Icelanders bought over 7,198 tonnes of Icelandic poultry (96% chicken). During the same period, 7,161 tonnes of Icelandic lamb and mutton (88% lamb) was sold.
