Seller of diseased poultry finally sent to jail

Peter Roberts, who is now also known as “Maggot Pete”, has finally been sent to jail. He went on the run before his conviction for selling contaminated poultry.

Roberts was caught supplying chicken and turkey unfit for humans. But he was on the run for four years until he was recently found in Cyprus. The man led a gang which made almost £1million selling dangerously substandard poultry over six years.

It is reported that his plant in Derby was plagued by rats and often flooded with sewage.

He was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud in 2003 after failing to attend the trial at Nottingham crown court, where five other men were also convicted.

Roberts has now been deported back to the UK. A Derby crown court judge gave him a year in jail on top of his six-year term.

Ben Nolan QC, prosecuting, said: "The victims were the companies and consumers who bought poultry believing it to be fit for human consumption when in reality it was condemned meat."
