More organic eggs consumed than battery

For the first time ever it has become evident that British consumers are eating more eggs laid by free-range chickens than battery farmed birds.

Sales of free range, barn and organic eggs from chickens allowed to roam outdoors accounted for just over 50% of total sales in 2006, which is a huge turnaround from five years previously. This is the case, despite a sharp rise in the price of organic eggs in 2006 from approximately £2.60 (€3.85) a dozen at the start of the year to £3.30 (€4.90) by the end.
Overall, sales of organic food and drink rose by 22% last year to just under £2 billion (€2.9 billion). It has been reported that consumers in London, the South-East and the South-West are most likely to buy organic food.
