Philippines reviews MAV rules for chicken

In the Philippines, a review of the rules on setting pre-approved import volumes for chicken is being made.

As part of continuing efforts to safeguard the interests of local poultry growers and ensure a stable supply of the commodity to consumers, Philippine Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap has said that by January 2008, the Department of Agriculture (DA) will have completed its review of the rules on the grant of minimum access volume (MAV)* to chicken importers to make the procedures more responsive to the demands of the market.
Yap recalled that poultry industry leaders pointed out that the MAV has become a tradable security for some corrupt importers who sell their import-volume permits instead of using this privilege to help the sector augment the supply of chicken during critical periods.
“We are very confident that after the due process and hearings, after hearing from all the stakeholders, we will be able to come up with a more responsive and with a more relevant MAV procedure by 2008,” said Yap.
* The MAV – the minimum volume for specific agricultural products that members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have agreed to allow entry to their respective countries at lower-than-regular tariff rates.
