Russia confirms H5N1 at poultry farm

A strain of the H5N1 bird flu virus has been reported after 410 birds died at a chicken farm in southern Russia.

Another 414 birds were culled and strict quarantine measures were in place at the farm in Krasnodar region.
Tests carried out in regional laboratories confirmed the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu strain was responsible for the deaths of birds at the Lebyazhye-Chepiginskoye farm, in the same region where the virus was detected in dead domestic birds in January.
A spokesman for the veterinary service said it was 'unlikely' that the chicken meat had reached local markets as preventive measures were taken 'very quickly' after the virus was suspected.
