Hong Kong to build central poultry processing unit

16-06-2008 | |

A central slaughtering plant is expected to be opened in 2011/12 in Hong Kong, said Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow.

Chow believes that central slaughtering is the best way to lower the risk of bird flu outbreaks and safeguard public health. He also stated that the government will assess the feasibility of daily chicken culls at retail stalls and a voluntary licence surrender scheme for the live poultry trade.

Avian influenza recently hit the country, resulting in the cull of thousands of birds. Dr Chow says that this may have been caused by smuggled poultry.
