Local bird flu vaccine available to Australians

19-06-2008 | |

A locally-made bird flu vaccine will be distributed to all Australians in the event of a bird-flu pandemic, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

The vaccine, which is the first Australian-made AI vaccine, named Panvax, has now been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. It is said that the vaccine protects against the current H5N1 strain of the virus.
It is further reported that Panvax works like an adaptable template that can be reconfigured to guard against any new influenza strains that develop.
