Tyson chicken flock shows mild bird flu strain

04-06-2008 | |

Tyson Foods said will destroy approx. 15,000 breeder hens in Arkansas that have been exposed to a mild strain of bird flu.

Preliminary tests on the flock show that the chickens antibodies of a mild or low pathogenic strain of bird flu called H7N3, though the company said that there is no indication that the birds currently have the virus.
According to Tyson, this discovery was part of routine, pre-slaughter surveillance conducted by the company.
While the findings are no threat to humans, shares of US chicken companies dropped as investors worried foreign buyers may ban US chicken.
