USPOULTRY gives 250,000 to UEP

The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association has presented $250,000 to the United Egg Producers to help educate California consumers about modern egg production systems.

This comes prior to the November ballot initiative that bans most modern layer housing and egg production systems in the state.
The California initiative, officially known as the Treatment of Farm Animals Act, would effectively ban both commercial cage and cage-free production. The initiative is backed by the Humane Society of the United States.
â€œAlthough the grant is directed at a specific and regional situation, it is a critical issue that has a potentially far-reaching and long-term impact on the entire poultry and egg industry. So it is vital that USPOULTRY and the various segments of the industry join in supporting the egg industry in California,” said Jim Brock, Crystal Farms, Chestnut Mountain, Ga., and a member of the board of directors of U.S. Poultry & Egg Association.
