Health authorities in China have reported that a 16-year-old male student has died of bird flu in central China’s Hunan city. This is the third death from the disease this year.

Reports state that the student fell ill on 8 January in Guizhou and was transferred to a hospital on 16 January after his condition worsened. Tests results from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention have shown that he was positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

According to an official, the student had contact with poultry. People who had close contact with the patient are under medical observation.
