Russia increased pork and poultry production

Despite the overall increase in the production of pork and poultry this year, the situation in the industry remains difficult, said the Minister of Agriculture of Russia Elena Skrynnik during a recent press conference in Lipetsk.

She noted that from Jan-Sept 2009, the production of livestock and poultry for slaughter totalled 6.3 mln t, which is 7% higher than the same period in 2008.

Such growth was mainly attributed to the increasing production of poultry meat (13%) and pork (10%). In the 3rd quarter of this year the production of livestock and poultry increased in 66 regions of the country.

“According to our forecasts, before the end of the year the share of meat imports in the total meat volumes will be reduced to 25% compared to 32% in 2008,” said Skrynnik, adding that the main goal of the industry is to compensate the decline of meat imports by the domestic production.

It is expected that by 2012 the share of meat imports in Russia will not exceed 18%.
