During the next 3 years Russia will increase domestic poultry production by 40%, according to the Russian Ministry of Economic Development estimates.

It is noted that the pork and poultry segments of the Russian meat market will keep growing as a result of technological modernisation of production and the recovery of consumer demand.

Thus, the growth of production will lead to further import volume reductions. The share of poultry imports by 2012 will not exceed 15%, compared to 35% in 2008.

In general, according to the ministry, the level of livestock and poultry for slaughter production this year will grow by 5.8%.

According to official data, in January-August 2009, Russia reduced the imports of fresh and frozen meat in physical terms by 26.9% compared to the same period last year – to 757,300 t, said the Federal Customs Service (FCS).

Poultry meat volumes decreased by 29.4% – to 556,500 t. In value terms the volume of red meat imports amounted to US$ 2,470 bln, while poultry to US$ 615,3 mln.
