W. Europe processed meat market €117.3 bln

According to latest report from Food for Thought, the Processed Meat market in Western Europe was worth €117.3 bln in 2008, or 10.6% of the total food and drink market of €1111 bln.

The report identifies 842 companies with 1128 country and product market shares across Western Europe (all 15 West European Community members plus Norway and Switzerland).

The largest country market, Germany, makes up 33% of the total 2008 West European processed meat market, worth €117.3 bln (for 20% of the total population). Other countries that rank amongst the top are: France (15%), Italy (13%), UK (11%), Spain (85), Austria (3%), and Belgium/Lux (3%).

Current major players are Campofrío Foods with a market share of 5%, followed by Nestlé (4.2%) and Danish Crown (4.1%). In the 80 country & product markets covered by this survey, Nestlé had a leading presence with 41 markets.

The largest product market (among the 5 products currently selected) is cured meat, which makes up 36% of the total 2008 West European processed meat market worth €117.3 bln, or  €42.7 bln. Bacon and ham makes up 30%, delicatessen products 21%, frozen convenience meat 9%, and canned meat 4%.

In the Processed Meat overall market by value, manufacturers' branded products make up 60.6% of the total market, and distributors' own label products 20.7%.
