USAID program to fight zoonoses

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched a 5-year global program to strengthen the human capacity of countries to identify and respond to outbreaks of newly emergent diseases.

The project, called RESPOND, has a $185 mln grant from the DAI development agency. The DAI team that leads the project has members from the University of Minnesota, Tufts University, Training Resources Group, Inc., and Ecology and Environment, Inc.

RESPOND will employ an integrated approach that unites public and private sector organizations to combat emerging disease on a global scale. The project will focus on long-term, short-term and in-service training, and academic preparation for health professionals.

The project also aims at establishing effective responses to fight outbreaks while they are still within animal populations as well as strengthen the capacity to respond to outbreaks within human communities.
