Canada investigates BSE material in poultry feed

31-03-2009 | |

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigates how potentially BSE contaminated material ended up in poultry feed at an Alberta rendering plant.

“These pieces are meant to be left out of the feed system for animals and of course also for humans. So these elements could potentially have gotten mixed in and that’s the concern,” said a CFIA spokeswoman, Margaret Gourlay. She said the safety of the Canadian food supply is not affected.

A CFIA news release said the “vast majority of the potentially contaminated feed has been identified, contained and will be disposed of. The company is working closely with the CFIA to quickly identify and dispose of all potentially contaminated feed.”
