Russia meat production: pork and poultry to grow

Food sales in Russia fell 1.3% in the first half of 2009. Amid the crisis, purchase demand shifted to the so-called basic products, i.e. essential products.

According to experts, there is a shift in demand in the meat market to relatively cheap poultry meat. In the first half of the year the poultry meat demand increased 10%, the production growth – up to 11.3%.

The poultry share of the total production of stock and poultry for slaughter in the first half of the year reached 56.4%.

Experts also point out that the restrictions on the pork import, imposed by Rosselkhoznadzor (Russian veterinary service) due to the spread of “the swine flu”, had an additional impact on the development of pig farming.

The production of pig meat in the first half of the year increased by 15%. The import quotas cuts together with the currency rate changes, leading to a substantial rise in prices for the import meat, also played a positive part.

Meanwhile, beef production in the first half of the year fell 12.9%.
