S. Africa: Poultry abattoir hygiene awards

Supreme Poultry Mafikeng has achieved first place in the 2008/9 Abattoir Hygiene Rating Scheme Awards for the North West Province, South Africa.

Supreme Poultry Tigane came second and Rainbow Chickens Rustenburg third in the award scheme in which the South African Department of Agriculture rates participating abattoirs in accordance with the Meat Safety Act (Act 40 of 2000).

This is the second year in which the awards have been made and, in 2007/8, Supreme Poultry Tigane took first place, while Supreme Poultry Mafikeng came second and Chubby Chicks third.

In the 2008/9 contest, 11 poultry and 10 red meat high-throughput abattoirs participated.

Commenting on the achievement, Supreme Poultry MD Izaak Breitenbach says, “We consider food safety, and therefore abattoir hygiene, to be of the highest priority. As a result, Supreme Poultry continuously strives to be the best in the industry when it comes to responsibly producing poultry meat for its customers and consumers.”
