Russia and the US may resolve poultry dispute

A trade dispute that has essentially halted US chicken exports to Russia may be resolved “very soon” according to James Sumner, president of the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council.

Bloomberg reports that US trade officials are taking a “new approach” in negotiations with Russia after earlier “bilateral talks were not making progress”, according to a memo the export council sent to its members recently. Sumner declined to provide further details.

“This is a very positive development,” said Sumner. “It likely wouldn’t have been settled under the previous approach. Now, I feel it has a very good chance, and very soon, too.”

Russia, once the largest importer of US chicken, essentially barred the meat as of 1 January by slashing the allowable amount of chlorine producers can use as a disinfectant.
