Bird flu halts Myanmar’s poultry exports to Saudi Arabia
Myanmar authorities have suspended exports of poultry products to Saudi Arabia due to the outbreak of bird flu in the country, the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (LBVD) has announced.
There have been two confirmed outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian influenza (H5N1) in the country this year. In January, the Sittway, western Rakhine state confirmed the first case when 700 three-month-old chickens in a poultry farm died unusually. This led to over 50,000 chickens in the region suspected of carrying virulent avian influenza to be culled.
The area most recently hit is Myanmar’s northwestern region, Sagaing, where two poultry farms detected the disease in the region early last month. The authorities buried the dead chickens and banned sale of poultry in nearby bazaars as well as poultry transportation.
