FAO posts draft environmental guidelines for poultry

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has posted three of its draft guidelines for assessing the environmental impact of global livestock production, including its guidelines for poultry.

The FAO Life Cycle Assessment guidelines, developed by the organisation’s Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance Partnership (LEAP) with input from the international agriculture community, are open for public comment through July 31 at the following website.

As the global poultry meat organisation recognized by FAO, the International Poultry Council (IPC) has been involved since LEAP was formed in developing the guidelines.

The IPC has contributed financially to LEAP and has worked cooperatively with the International Egg Commission to provide two specialists to serve on the Technical Advisory Group that has worked to develop the guidelines.

Also, an IPC working group comprised of members led by Anne-Marie Neeteson of Aviagen and Lara Sanfrancesco of UNAITALIA, the Italian national poultry industry organisation, has been active in reviewing the guidelines.
