LPAI outbreak among South African ostriches

Chief Director at the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Animal Production and Health, Dr Bothle Michael Modisane has reported to the World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE) five new outbreaks of LPAI H5N2.

The outbreaks were found on commercial ostrich farms in Western Cape Province and Eastern Cape Province.



In total 90 ostriches have died, out of 3,890 susceptible birds and 1,067 cases. The outbreak was detected during routine surveillance for HPAI. The outbreak started early June, and the source of the outbreak is unknown.
