Canadian chicken sausages recalled in E. coli scare

Canadian sausage producer, Missing Link Extraordinary Sausage, is recalling frozen, raw, ground chicken products from the marketplace due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination.

Over the last three months, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have been conducting exhaustive investigations into the E. coli outbreak in Alberta.

“Recently we were advised that in the course of their analysis, four cases of E. coli had been linked to a Missing Link product. We were shocked and devastated by this news,” the company said in a statement.

“We’ve learned that all indications point to the likelihood that we received a small batch of chicken which had been contaminated with E. coli bacteria before it reached our kitchen. All signs point to an “upstream” contamination. Since E. coli bacteria are invisible and odorless, we were obviously unaware that the meat had been tainted. Subsequently, we made that chicken into a batch of Garlic, Garlic & More Garlic, most likely during the week of August 25th.”

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says there have been four reported illnesses associated with the products from the Calgary-based company.

The CFIA recall notice can be found here.
