Russia aims for 6 mln tonnes of poultry
Despite the recent fall in the pace of development of the poultry industry in the country, Russia plans to increase production of poultry meat to 6 mln tonnes per year by 2020, according to the country's Ministry of Agriculture.
According to the report, in 2013 production of poultry meat in live weight reached 5.1 million tonnes, which accounts for 42% of total meat production in the country. The largest part of this volume is broiler meat. The share of imports of poultry meat is currently estimated at only 10%.
The report also notes that more than RUB 300 bn (US$9bn) has been invested in the development of the Russian poultry industry in recent years. These measures helped to modernise and reconstruct more than 400 enterprises and farms.
Additionally, the Russian poultry market in recent years has been characterised by the growing proportion of chilled poultry which accounts for about 50-60% of total poultry production in the country. Also during the last couple of years several farms for the production of different types of poultry meat, notably turkey and duck, were commissioned.
To date, the per capita production of poultry meat is 26.6 kilograms, and consumption 29.3 kilograms, said the Ministry of Agriculture.
