H5N8 keeps spreading in German zoo

Germany still has no control over the outbreak of high pathogenic bird flu (H5N8) in the country. The virus was found last Thursday in a white stork in the zoo of Rostock. Now it is also spreading to other bird species in the zoo.

43 other birds have contracted the dangerous H5N8 virus, including ducks, scarlet ibis, storks and geese. According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the German State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, all 500 birds in the zoo are being examined. The zoo remains closed for visitors.

The H5N8 virus also reached the German state Thuringia. A wild duck that was shot there last week, also appears to have been a carrier of the virus.
